About us
Impromptu Trio was formed in late 2020, beginning its musical journey with its first rehearsals in early 2021. That same year, the group recorded its debut album, Spontaneus, quickly establishing a strong presence within the music scene in Miami, Florida, where the trio is currently based.
The group features renowned percussionist Miguel Hernández on drums, accomplished bassist and sound engineer Wuilmer Lacruz on electric bass, and acclaimed musician and composer Leonardo Cardozo on the 10-string mandolin.
Impromptu Trio presents a fresh and innovative musical concept, blending jazz with the rich rhythmic traditions of Venezuelan and South American music, while also embracing influences from international genres.

Drums
Miguel Hernandez
Miguel Hernández, originally from San Cristóbal and currently based in Miami, is widely recognized as one of Venezuela’s leading drummers. A devoted follower of Jesus Christ, he has built an international career performing alongside renowned artists and projects such as Jeremias Lawson, Daniella Mass, Nestor Torres, Miami Symphony Orchestra, Edgar De Croquer, Frank Croquers, Marialé, Las Morillo, Henry Linarez, Rafael “El Pollo” Brito, Aldemaro Romero, Yordano, Robert Quintero, Prisca Dávila, Emilio Lovera, Iglesia Puerta de Salvación, Tamara, Otmaro Ruíz, Luz Marina & Menage, HMJ Project, Guillermo Dávila, Elias Tona Jazz Trío, Impromptu Trio, and the Miguel Hernández Project, among others.
Miguel is also an exclusive artist for major international brands including Yamaha, Sabian, Vic Firth, Remo, Gon Bops, and several others. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Biblical Musical Arts with a specialization in drums in 2012 and released his debut album, Afrovenezuelan Jazz Standards, in 2013.
He is the first Venezuelan drummer to publish an instructional book on Afro-Venezuelan rhythms for drums and later released a second educational book alongside pianist and producer Hildemaro Álvarez. Miguel has presented masterclasses and clinics in universities, music schools, and churches across countries including Spain, England, Austria, the Dominican Republic, Colombia, Brazil, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Canada, Argentina, and the United States.
10 strings Mandolin
Leonardo Cardozo
Leonardo Cardozo, born in Barquisimeto and currently based in Miami, is a Venezuelan mandolinist, composer, and arranger recognized for his work with the 10-string mandolin. A Systems Engineer graduate from UNEFA, he began studying music at the age of seven influenced by his family’s strong musical background and later completed musical studies in Venezuela, Curitiba, São Paulo, and Málaga.
Leonardo has performed as First Mandolin with the Orquesta Típica Andrés Eloy Blanco and as part of the mandolin section of the Orquesta Típica de Venezuela. He is a three-time winner of the International Jazz Festival of Barquisimeto (2012–2014) and a two-time winner at the International Plucked Strings Festival “Ciudad de Cristal” in A Coruña.
With six albums available on digital platforms, his latest project, Spontaneous by Impromptu Trio, features eight of his original compositions. Throughout his career, Leonardo has shared the stage with renowned artists including Huascar Barradas, Jorge Glem, and C4 Trio, and has performed in festivals across Europe, Latin America, and the United States.
In addition to his performance career, Leonardo has worked as a music educator with Venezuela’s youth orchestra system and as a professor of mandolin and music introduction at UNEFA, Venezuela.
Electric Bass
Wuilmer Lacruz
Venezuelan bassist and sound engineer originally from Mérida, he began his musical journey at an early age under the guidance of his father and later studied electric bass, harmony, music theory, double bass, and jazz with renowned Venezuelan musicians and educators including Edwin Arellano, Heriberto Rojas, Alejandro Pereira, and Johan Espinoza. He has also attended clinics and seminars with internationally acclaimed artists such as John Patitucci.
He represented Venezuela in major national and international folk music festivals, earning first place as bassist at the “Silbón de Oro” Festival in 2008 and participating in the International Folkloric and Tourism Festival of the Plains in Colombia in 2011. Throughout his career, he has performed with respected ensembles including Raíces de Venezuela, Soñartes, Ensamble de Música Criolla de la Universidad de los Andes, Ensamble A Tono Acústico, Ensamble Shapori, and Colectivo Mérida Suena, as well as in concerts with the Orquesta Sinfónica del Estado Mérida.
Currently based in Miami, he combines his performance career with professional work in audio engineering, specializing in recording, mixing, live sound, and music production. For the past two years, he has served as recording and mixing engineer at L&A Records, contributing to projects by artists including Gustavo Carucí, Miguelito Díaz, Carolina Montes, Magno Meza, Omar Herrera, and Free Cover Llanero.
